UNIBEN student shot dead … 6 NYSC members involved in auto crash

A 300-level Technical and Vocational Education (TVE) student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) was on Tuesday night shot dead in the Edo State capital.

This is the second time in less than two weeks that such killing will take place as a 300-level Chemistry student of the university, Ejiroghene Gbenedio, was hacked to death with a battle axe at about 7 p.m on October 24.

The deceased, simply identified as James, was shot dead at Ekosodin, a satellite community of the Ugbowo campus of the university.

His corpse was sighted in a white police Hilux van at the Accident and Emergency Ward of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) yesterday morning.

The white T-Shirt and lemon knickers he wore were soaked in blood, while his head was shattered.
One of the university’s students, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said James was on his way home at about 11 p.m after watching a football match at one of the viewing centres in the community, when he met his death at the hands of his assailants.

“It might not be unconnected with cult activities on the campus. But he was aware of what happens at Ekosodin at nights. I just don’t know why he decided to risk his life like that. What a pity,” the source said.
When contacted, UNIBEN’s Public Relations Officer, Harrison Osarenren, said no killing took place on the campus.

In another incident, no fewer than 6 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members travelling to Bayelsa State from Lagos and Ibadan were on Tuesday night sustained injuries in a multiple accident, involving an articulated truck and two commercial buses along Ore-Benin Expressway, between Okada and Ogbemudia farm, and have been hospitalised.
